Progression Series

Progression

In this series/exhibition of work, I am attempting to explore how the body can relate to the space around it, including interaction with the space. Through exploring the space and its relationship to the figure, I also hoped to express emotion or a sense of before, or after, action through pose, canvas size, and color usage. I enjoy painting the figure because of it’s simplicity, appearing as a mass of many planes, but more so, its complexity, the struggle of attaining the feeling of weight, skin tones, pinpointing all the shapes and color relationships, and also, because I myself am a figure.  Exploring the space and its relationship to the figure is obviously something that can become very personal.  I also have found myself using tattooed people as my subjects for painting because of the unnatural skin tones, which is also another observational reason for my choice of color application.  This series is not complete, but has been extensively worked through up until this point.  In this show I am displaying the progression of this idea up until this point in its creation.

In this painting I used 7 figures and layered them on top of one another in a way that they would relate to each other, and so that you can also still see each figure.  I wanted this painting to be a longer experience for the viewer, because although there are 7 figures very clearly stated in this painting, they appear slowly to the viewer, with a ghostly aesthetic.  I plan on continuing with multiple figure paintings.
